Student Visa Summary
This visa is for students who want to come to Australia to study at a registered education institution.
• you can participate in an eligible course of study in Australia
• bring family members to Australia with you
• apply online in or outside Australia
• travel in and out of Australia
• work up to 40 hours every 2-week period once your course starts

Stay
This is a temporary visa to study up to 5 years. The type of course and its length will determine the length of stay Primary school children enrolled in years 1-4 can only be granted a student visa for a maximum of 2 years.

Cost
The visa costs from AUD620 for the main applicant, unless they are exempt. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa. You might also have to pay other costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.

Eligibility
1. If you are a school student (but not participating in a secondary school student exchange program), you must be aged 6 or older to apply for this visa.

You must also be:
• less than 17 years old when you begin Year 9
• less than 18 years old when you begin Year 10
• less than 19 years old when you begin Year 11
• less than 20 years old when you begin Year 12

2. You must include evidence of enrolment in study with your student visa application, or your application will not be valid and cannot be processed.

3. If you are applying for a student visa and you are under 18 years of age, you must have adequate welfare arrangements in place while you are in Australia.

4. You might need to provide evidence of your English language skills at the time you submit your visa application.

5. You and your family members must have and maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay in Australia. You and your family members must be covered by Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from an approved Australian health insurance provider, unless an 'Exception' applies.

6. You must have enough money to pay for your stay in Australia.

7. You must be a genuine temporary entrant and intend to return home after studying in Australia.

Student Guardian Visa Summary

International students studying in Australia on a student visa may require a guardian if they are under 18 years of age. There may also be exceptional circumstances where a student over 18 years of age may need a guardian for religious or cultural reasons.

• study an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) for less than 20 hours per week, or any other study or training for no more than 3 months

Stay

You can stay in Australia until a date specified on your visa grant letter. In deciding this date, the Department of Home Affairs usually consider the length of the student visa holder’s stay or when that student turns 18.

Eligibility

1. You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa.

2. You must be the parent of the student visa holder, or a person who has custody of the student, or a relative of the student, aged 21 years or older, nominated in writing by a parent or person who has custody of the student.

3. You must be able to provide accommodation, general welfare and support to the student.

4. You must show evidence that you have enough money to pay for your stay in Australia for meeting the costs and expenses of yourself, your accompanying family members and in most cases, the student visa holder.

5. You are personally liable for all your healthcare costs while you are in Australia. Medical insurance helps limit your financial liability. You must maintain adequate health cover for the whole of your stay if you are granted this visa. Your insurance should cover you for medically necessary treatment, including transport.

6. You and any family members who apply for the visa with you must meet our health requirement.

7. You must only intend to stay temporarily in Australia and do the things you are allowed to do on this visa.
